Yard sales

Postby Helena » Tue Jul 27, 2010 7:08 pm

Does anyone ever have a yard sale round here? By that I mean just putting up a table in the front of the house, and selling off (cheaply) unwanted stuff? Have you ever held one? Was it successful if you did?

I've just had my flat rewired, and I have piles of stuff that I simply can't find room for now. So many things that I've carried around with me for years but, now I've downsized so much, I just don't have room for it. I must get myself sorted! I don't have a car so car boot sales are not an option for me.

Hi, Now that's a strange thing, because I was thinking of the very same thing, they are so popular in USA, it would be great if we could hear from people who have done this.

My mother has crazy amounts of gear to get rid of too, much of it still boxed and unused. We've been car booting successfully in Battersea but we can only take so much in the car.

We have side gate access and could probably get a few trestle tables in the front garden.

But it might it be an idea to use either St Swithun's Church Hall or the Baptist Hall for a morning and have a larger sale? We could whip up posters and advertise locally...

If its on our doorstep, I wouldn't mind helping out with multiple trips back and forth in the car.

A jumble sale at St Swithun's Hall would be a brilliant idea!

We could have cake stalls too! I'm sure Jane the vicar would approve if someone wants to contact her.

Lots of good ideas! 8) I was thinking more of a 'table top' sale than a jumble sale though. Yes I know, I'm a mercenary! :P

A group of mums have been doing table top sales in Lochaber Hall over the past year and hae been selling baby/children's stuff. The sales always seem well attended so I reckon we're in the right area for that sort of thing to be a success.

Does anyone have a connection at the Baptist Church hall? Or any hall? Would we have to pay to rent it, or could they charge a small entrance fee?

Hey all,

Jane, Vicar at St Swithun's seems keen and is getting back to me. IIRC someone from the Church has posted here recently which is brilliant.

Not yet heard back from the Baptist Church.

Has anyone got a contact at Lochaber Hall?

St Swithun's would be the easiest to sign post I think. But I think cost will be a determining factor too. But if we can get a few more locals on board, costs could be nominal.

St Swithun's prices:

The charitable rate for the Hall is £20 hour or £150 a day.

I have copied this email to our facilties manager and she will get back to you very shortly.

We would be very happy to get involved.

Is £20 an hour ok?

Did anyone get onto Lochaber Hall?

I have spoken to Honesty, the minister at the Baptist Church in Radford Road, and he says there would be no problem to have a sale there. They charge £25 an hour & Saturday mornings in August/September would be OK. He asked me who was organising it, and I had to admit it was kind of a joint effort!!

The mobile number for Lochaber Hall doesn't work, and the landline (020 83181788) just rings & rings, not even an ansafone.

Just had an idea! Image

What about having it in Mountsfield Park? Under the bandstand?

Hi!

The park could have issues with passing foot traffic.
Plus the faff about getting permissions and insurance and the like.

This lack of pm thing is really bugging me now! I want to give you my number and email!
Edited: Possible solution- would you like to swap numbers via Peter the webmaster? He has both of our emails. (Is that ok Peter?) webmaster AT hithergreen DOT org DOT uk

Regarding the yard sale-

My preference would be St Swithun's- easier to get to, plus its cheaper.
The congregation are willing to help and may like stalls themselves. There's nothing to say we couldnt invite the Baptists along too- get a little ecumenical action going.

We could charge nominal fees to have a table, plus entrance fee to cover any costs. Any extra could go to charity?

Publicity
Posters which invite local people to have stalls- 'Clear out your clutter' or similar?

Ive had a couple of really positive conversations with people working locally and they are up for helping out with ideas and on the day.

Im free this Friday after four- we could go and see the chickens and have a chat. Others are invited btw!
