Consultation on re-routing of the N171

Postby mikesilky » Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:52 am

I've just seen that TFL are consulting on a plan to re-route the N171 back to Hither Green station.

If you'd like to see it re-routed back to the station (like me), or if you are opposed to it, then details of the proposal are here:

You can leave your feedback on the TFL website.

I'd like to see it rerouted back to HG station, but not via Sandhurst Road - double decker buses are so noisy on there and it is a residential street which already gets a lot of bus traffic. If it must go through Catford, surely it can just come up Brownhill?

I have just responded. Below is the response Caroline received when she raised this very point with the Mayor of London last year.

Night bus provision to Hither Green
Question number 0628/2009
Meeting date 25/03/2009

Question by
Caroline Pidgeon

Since the N171 night bus service was terminated at Bellingham (Catford bus garage) residents of Hither Green have been left without a night bus service. While we appreciate this has been kept under review, could there now be a serious appraisal of demand with a view to restoring the original service pattern?

Answer by Boris Johnson

TfL always undertakes an appraisal before proposing major changes to the bus network. This was done when the N171 was restructured in April 2006 and found that around 30 passengers per weeknight using the service to or from Hither Green.

Options for providing a night service to the Hither Green area have subsequently been investigated but none have so far proved cost effective. TfL will however keep this under review.

I am always baffeld by this, I campaigned in the local paper to keep the service of the N171, I was told by TFL that less than 5% of passengers use the part of the route that served Hither Green but being that it is less than 5% of the route the argument holds no ground, if any of you remember at the time the service was withdrawn, phase 1 of the development on the hospital grounds was just about completed and within weeks of the bus service going we had 1600 new residents in Hither Green, who co-incidentally were un aware of the removal of the service as it seemed carfully timed that it had gone before anyone moved in.....all that aside, I will be really pleased when it has been resumed and hope that the hither greenies will stay out late and be confident in getting back to the "hood" safe and sound what ever the time, also as a landlord it makes it much easier to let a property if it can be accesses 24 hours a day. please all follow the above link and support the cause
we can all benifit from being back on the map....TFLs map that is

Hi all please go to this link http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/project ... 15907.aspx to support the reinstatement of the N171 route. We really need it, I can't understand why it was removed in the first place. Is it just a coincidence it was withdrawn just before Meridian South was completed so they could say there was no demand???
